WHAT YOU’LL DO AS A FELLOW

We are looking for passionate individuals with a strong conviction towards education equality and have the desire to make a positive impact in Indonesia. As a Teach First Indonesia fellow, you will be responsible to teach at an elementary school in Kabupaten Pesisir Selatan, West Sumatra or Kabupaten Sanggau, Wes Kalimatan for two years. During this commitment, you are also expected to actively engage and collaborate with the local community – this includes students, parents, fellow teachers, educators, and the local government.

In the classroom:

  • As elementary homeroom teachers, Fellows will teach a variety of subjects and have autonomy to create the environment and learning experience that they envision.
  • Provide individualized instruction to students in specific subject areas, including but not limited to: Math, Science, English and Bahasa Indonesia.
  • Develop customized lesson plans tailored to the student’s learning style, strengths, and areas for improvement.
  • Assist with homework, test preparation, and other academic tasks to reinforce learning and improve grades.
  • Monitor and assess student progress, adjusting teaching strategies as necessary to ensure continued academic growth.
  • Foster a supportive and motivating learning environment that encourages student engagement and confidence.
  • Plan for activities during holidays/weekend.
  • Communicate regularly with parents about the child’s progress and any concerns.

Outside of the classroom:

  • Initiate school or community development projects to help school and community achieve their vision of providing quality education for the students.
  • Interact and network with stakeholders, such as students, parents, and local community leaders. This may include developing a new system, language or skill training, or initiative projects that enhance school – community relations.
  • Actively advocate for education development by collaborating with local stakeholders to promote policies that support improving quality education.

Pre-service

Begin your journey at our pre-departure residential training where you’ll learn essential teaching skills, embrace innovation and explore your leadership potential.

Year 1

After intensive training, you’ll work in a school. You’ll engage with students, families, communities, and the local government. During the first part of your fellowship, you’ll also have the opportunity to obtain a national teacher certification*.

*Through the Teacher Professional Education (Pendidikan Profesi Guru).

Year 2

Envision a transformative future for your students, then bring it to life using your acquired skills. Lead and engage in a change-making project. Collaborating with the local community and stakeholders. Post fellowship, we’ll help you career plan and map out future endeavors that are both purposeful yet impactful towards education equity.

  • Interested applicants must be an Indonesian citizen.
  • Applicants must be younger than 32 years old at the time of their application. 
  • Applicants must hold, or about to graduate from – a bachelor’s degree in any major/field of study with a minimum GPA of 3.00/4.00.
  • Applicants must not already be registered as a teacher in Dapodik (Data Pokok Pendidikan).
  • Exemplifies Teach First Indonesia’s values and demonstrates a strong belief and commitment to the movement.
  • Willing to commit two years into teaching at an elementary school in Pesisir Selatan.
  • Able to communicate comfortably in English, demonstrated by exam scores from any of the following tests: TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, IBT Prediction test.

 

You do not have to submit an English language score exam if:

  • You completed your study (both or either undergraduate/graduate) in an English speaking country.
  • You received a high school and/or college equivalent education where English is the main language of instruction.

Applying to the fellowship requires you to create an account on our website. This ensures that your data will be saved. The application comes in three pages:

 

  1. Introduce yourself

In the first part of the application, you’ll be asked to provide your name, contact details, academic and/or professional experience as well as a reference. 

  1. Answer three short essays

The second part of the application requires you to answer the following questions:

  • Why do you want to be a Teach First Indonesia fellow?

  • Explain what makes you a great fit for the Teach First Indonesia Fellowship, using clear examples of your own leadership experience.

  • What do you expect to get out of the Fellowship and how would this experience fit into your future career plans?

  1. Submit documents

In the final part of the application, you will be directed to upload relevant documents into a Google drive folder. Please provide PDF/JPEG/PNG/Docs of the following:

  • Identification document (KTP, Drivers License or Passport)

  • A digital copy of your degree or letter of degree confirming your graduation date (if you are a soon to be graduate)

  • A digital copy of your transcript

  • CV/Resume

  • Any English proficiency score you’ve taken

 

Note: we will use the English proficiency score as an indicator of your ability to comfortably communicate in English. Please feel free to upload any scores you see fit regardless of expiry date and/or test types.
